Biography
Nawab Deen Yar Jung was the third son of Nawab Aziz Jung Bahadur.
Nawab Deen Yar Jung was born on 26 September, 1893 in Hyderabad at the house across from Aziz Bagh where his father Aziz Jung used to live before Aziz Bagh was built. He was married on April, 1919 to Fatima Begum, daughter of Fakhiuddin Hussain, a Civil Surgeon of Khurshid Jahi Paigah. Fatima Begum had a twin sister, and one younger brother.
He worked at various districts of the Nizam’s Dominion in the Judicial and Revenue Departments and as District Collector. He also served as the Director of Ecclesiastical Department for a number of years.
On June 6, 1944, Nawab Deen Yar Jung took over as Commisioner of Police. He was the Director General of City Police during a critical period of Hyderabad’s history before and after Police Action in 1948. For his valuable services to the State he was awarded the title of Deen Yar Jung, and recieved the Asafia Gold Medal on 11th May, 1948
Deen Yar Jung had a large circle of associates from diverse social, political and religious affiliations.
Deen Yar Jung’s Mother
Deen Yar Jung’s mother Amtulla Begum was the youngest daughter of Mohammed Abdul Khudus Chida, an employee of the Revenue Department of Hyderabad. Amtulla Begum had two older siblings, a brother Abdul Aziz Chida and a sister Ismatunissa Begum. She also belonged to the same family tree as Deen Yar Jung’s father Aziz Jung. Aziz Kung was married to Amtulla Begum in the year 1889, when he was the Asisstant Secretary of the Revenue Department. She died on 25th April 1933.
His Character
Deen Yar Jung was a typical representative of an outstanding personality one may be proud of. He represented the Eastern traditions with dignity. He was sophisticated in behavior and was an exceptionally well-mannered individual. He was courteous to everyone. In spite of his extremely busy schedule, he found the time to pay attention to any one that approached him irrespective of their social or economic status, particularly if they were in need of help. He was a man of ethics. The exigencies of administration sometimes made him assume a firm external appearance, but in reality he was very soft, kind hearted and considerate, even to the point of occasionally being exploited by unscrupulous persons.
He had opponents as all serious administrators have, but it is a fact that even the worst of his enemies had no grievance against him for having been harmed in any way, but for not having been benefitted adequately or to his own satisfaction. He commanded respect from all around him and inspired confidence among his subordinates. He was a great disciplinarian himself, and expected discipline by his personal example and behavior rather than by mere precepts. He was punctual, worked long hours and was systematic in his habits.
In all his dealings, Deen Yar Jung commanded respect and admiration, and inspired confidence. He was known for his taste in good clothes. He was one of the best dressed men in town.
Deen Yar Jung held an important assignment during a critical period in the History of Hyderabad. As mentioned elsewhere in the book, he was the Director General of Police before and immediately after the Police Action. It appeared as though the providence had chosen him to be in charge of the Police Department at the time of this crisis. It goes to his credit that he maintained and strengthened an atmosphere of peace and security for everyone in town. It was due to his administrative ability and statesmanship, and indeed his personal influence that fanaticism from every possible quarter was kept at bay and peace maintained both before and after the duration of the Police Action.
Deen Yar Jung can truly be regarded as a savior of Hyderabad and deserves to be richly honored as such. The main features of his administrative talent lie in his fair-mindedness, quick decision making, sound judgment, robust common sense, power of taking initiative and responsibilities.
In summary he was a more distinguished person than the majority of his contemporaries. However, the main characteristic which distinguishes him from the rest is his regard, commitment and faithfulness to his superior, H.E.H., the Nizam.
